I fell in maddening love with Lana Del Rey for the sorcery of her beauty. Everything about her is conjured, but in such a hyperbolically feminine way that I can’t help but exhale with my own lip-biting fantasizing. Crowns of flowers? Sexy surrealist alligator straddling? Nether regions that taste like high-fructose corn syrup? Where did I go wrong?

Jitters tend to barge in uninvited before big events, like taking the stage or getting down on one knee. Momentary anxiety activates the amygdala, your brain’s danger lookout, and triggers fight-or-flight symptoms, says Srinivasan Pillay, a psychiatrist in Cambridge, Massachusetts. To pump the brakes on panic, focus on slowing and deepening your breath. Here’s what’s happening as you await your Big Moment.

Though our eyes don’t bulge out of our heads as we make “awooga” sounds, the physical symptoms of arousal are just as telltale. Lust is a head-spinning prequel to what we hope will be a toe-curling conclusion. And unlike most animals, humans have the capacity for sexual interest all the time, notes Irwin Goldstein, director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego. Here’s what happens when your body pines.

1. A shot glass
2. Unflavored vodka (for dippin’, not drinkin’) (unless you want to drink)
3. Newspaper (remember those?) cut up into lil squares
4. A light-colored nail polish
5. Topcoat

My nail polish from American Apparel (seen here) peels something awful, so I salvaged it for this. Paint your nails with the color of your choice and let it completely dry.

Next, dip your fingers in the non-drinkin’ vodka and press and hold the newspaper bits to your nails. Wait about 15 seconds and remove slowly.

Cover with a top coat and you’ve got literate nails.

Smoked Out

Smoked Out:
Why Mad Men might make you reach for your vices

Carnal Clues: The Biology of a Breakup Psychology Today

Fresh heartbreak sparks a common montage: hibernating, thinking the world has ended, and keeping Kleenex in business, for starters. In a close relationship, you think of your partner as a part of you. “So when he or she pulls away, it feels like a part of your body was ripped off,” says Arthur Aron, a psychologist at SUNY at Stony Brook. The most reliable saving grace is time: As the days pass, activity diminishes in brain regions that register attachment.

But when you’re elated, what exactly puts that bounce in your step? Researchers are just beginning to unravel the physiology of euphoria because it’s hard to induce and test in a lab, says Sarah Pressman, a psychologist at the University of Kansas. So until someone proposes to his girlfriend while she’s hooked up to electrodes, here’s what we know about the biology of joy.

After a few dropped calls, you feel an urge to Hulk-smash your phone. Or maybe, trembling, you vividly imagine yourself smacking the office gum-chewer. Why? Anger instantly highjacks your body and prepares it to either fight or scamper away, says PT blogger and anger expert Steven Stosny, author of Love Without Hurt. Here’s the biology behind the unforgettable sensation of white-hot wrath.
